Step 1 of 5 · Create an option setFrom the OPTNS home page, click Create. An option set is the list of fields shoppers fill in.

Before you start

  • A Shopify store on an Online Store 2.0 theme
  • The products you want to add options to
  • Prices for any paid add-ons

Setup steps

  1. Install OPTNS and choose a plan

    Apps › OPTNS › Plans

    Install the app and approve its permissions. Free covers up to 3 option sets with basic fields. Starter and Growth add paid add-ons, conditional logic, file uploads and box sets, each with a 14-day trial.

  2. Create an option set

    OPTNS › Option sets › Create

    Add the fields shoppers fill in: text, dropdowns, switches, swatches or file uploads. Mark fields required where needed, and set a price on any choice that costs extra.

    • Show on: choose products, collections or tags.
    • Conditions (Growth): show a field only when another field has a certain value.
    Keep labels short and specific. “Initials to emboss (up to 3)” gets fewer support emails than “Personalization”.

  3. Add the Product options block to your theme

    Online Store › Themes › Customize › Product page › Add block › Apps › Product options

    Click Add to theme on the OPTNS home page. Place the block above the Add to cart button and click Save.

  4. Confirm checkout pricing

    OPTNS › Home › Setup

    Checkout pricing turns on automatically. Prices on options are added to the order as “Product options”. If a choice is linked to a real product, that product is added to the cart as its own line instead.

  5. Place a test order

    Online store › Product page

    Pick some options, add to cart and go through checkout with a test payment. Check that the price matches and that choices appear on the order in Shopify admin.

  6. Add box sets and cart recommendations (optional)

    OPTNS › Box sets

    On Growth, create a box set: choose eligible products and how many items each box needs. Shoppers can't add an incomplete box to the cart. Set up Cart recommendations to suggest add-ons in the cart.

After setup

  • Export option sets as CSV to back them up or edit in bulk.
  • Use Appearance to match fonts, colors and spacing to your theme.

Troubleshooting

Options don't show on a product.

Check the set's Show on rules include that product, and that the block is on the product template that product uses.

The checkout price doesn't include the add-on.

Open the OPTNS home page and confirm the checkout pricing step is done. If it isn't, click Turn on.

Uploaded files are missing.

File uploads are a Growth feature. Check your plan under Plans.
